From Farm Road to Subdivision in One Generation

Nolensville was a rural crossroads not very long ago and is now one of the faster growing communities in Williamson County. The gate work here follows that curve. We are called to newer homes on planned lots and to the older acreage properties that were here before the growth, and the two projects have almost nothing in common.

On the newer builds the site is graded, power is usually close, and the conversation is mostly about design and access control. On the older properties we are dealing with longer driveways, existing fencing that may or may not tie in cleanly, and sometimes entrances that were built for a farm and are now serving a house.

Adding a Gate to a Home That Was Not Designed For One

Most homes in Nolensville's newer neighborhoods were built without an entrance gate, which means everything we install here is a retrofit. That is routine work, but it comes with a few consistent questions.

Where does power come from, given the driveway is already poured and nobody wants it cut. Is there room in the swing arc, or does the driveway curve too soon after the property line. Does the HOA have architectural standards that apply. And how does the gate relate to fencing that already exists, since a gate with nothing tying into it on either side does not read as an entrance.

Sizing the Entrance to the Road You Are On

Nolensville Road carries real traffic now, and so do several of the connecting roads that were quiet a decade ago. That has a direct bearing on gate design for any property fronting one of them.

A vehicle waiting for a gate to open needs to be fully clear of the travel lane while it waits. If the setback from the pavement is short, that argues for a slide gate rather than a swing gate, and it argues strongly for an exit loop or vehicle probe so residents leaving never sit in the road waiting for the gate to cycle.

Sight lines matter too. On a curve, or where a hill crests near the entrance, the position of the gate and the direction it opens both affect how much warning approaching traffic has. We walk the road approach in both directions as part of the site visit, not just the driveway.

Repair and Aging Systems

Nolensville also has a growing population of gates that have been in service for ten or fifteen years and are starting to show it. Operators that strain, photo eyes that drift, control boards that have taken a lightning hit. Those are all normal calls for us, including on systems installed by companies that are no longer around.

Fencing That Ties the Entrance Together

A gate standing between two posts with nothing running off either side does not read as an entrance and does not secure anything. On Nolensville's newer lots this comes up constantly, because the home was built with either no fencing or fencing that stops well short of the driveway.

Tying the two together is part of the design. That can mean running fence off the gate posts in matching material, adding low masonry wing walls that curve back from the opening, or in some cases rebuilding a short run of existing fence so the transition does not look accidental.
